Definitions of mission and unity

Mission

These are the Five Marks of Mission often quoted:

  1. To proclaim the good news of the Kingdom
  2. To teach,baptise and nurture new believers
  3. To respond to human need by loving service
  4. To seek to transform unjust structures of society
  5. To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of earth.

Churches Together in Britain and Ireland conducted a major project looking at Foundations for MissionFFM

The book describes and records a research project looking at how different organisations use the word 'mission' and what they mean by it.

 

The book is also an audit tool for other organisations to think about their 'foundations for mission'.

Unity

In the preparitory papers for the Swanwick declaration which provides the basis for Churches Together in England, we read, 'our earnest desire is to become more fully, in his own time, the one Church of Christ, united in faith, communion, pastoral care and mission'. (Next Steps for Churches Together in Pilgrimage p7)

 

The 'ecumenical vision' is often debated, as illustrated here by an article commenting on the statements from national church leaders 2009.  The article is entitled 'Unity for mission - where are we now?
