The Current Presidents
The Archbishop of Westminster is the Most Revd Vincent Nichols. He became a President of Churches Together in England when he became Archbishop of Westminster in 2009.
He studied for the priesthood at the Venerable English College in Rome from 1963 to 1970, gaining licences in philosophy and theology at the Gregorian University. He was ordained priest in Rome on 21 December 1969 for the Archdiocese of Liverpool. He has served as Secretary to the Bishops' Conference, as an assistant Bishop in the Westminster Diocese and as Archbishop of Birmingham.
The Archbishop of Canterbury is the Most Revd Dr Rowan Williams Rowan Williams became the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury in December 2002, and through that office became a president of Churches Together in England. As Archbishop of Canterbury he is the leader of the world-wide Anglican Communion.
After research in Oxford (on Christianity in Russia), he lectured at Mirfield Theological College. From 1977, he spent nine years in academic and parochial work in Cambridge. From 1986-1992, Dr Williams was Professor of Theology at Oxford. He was enthroned as Bishop of Monmouth in 1992 and Archbishop of Wales in 2000.
The Free Churches Moderator is Revd Michael Heaney who was inducted on 13th April 2011 becoming a President of Churches Together in England.
Michael currently serves as the General Secretary of The Congregational Federation (a fellowship of some 300 independent congregationally ordered churches across England, Scotland & Wales). He is also a Director of the Free Church Federal Council (Incorporated); Governor of Northern College (United Reformed and Congregational); Director of Congregational & General Insurance Charitable Trust; Chair of Council and Trustee of Congregational Memorial Hall Trust; Member of the Partnership Forum of the Fresh Expressions Network. Coming to faith as a teenager in a Baptist Church, Michael subsequently embarked on a career in banking. Following a move to Northampton, Michael encountered the Congregational Federation, joining a small village fellowship and being appointed Lay Pastor. Undertaking training and leaving behind a 13 year career in banking Michael then received a call to full time ministry at Witney Congregational Church in 1990. This involved 10 very happy and blessed years of pastoral ministry during which time the church experienced significant growth and successfully transformed its premises by way of a major rebuild. Following a brief period as Assistant to the General Secretary Michael became General Secretary of the Congregational Federation in 2000 based in Nottingham.
Bishop Jana Jeruma Grinberga is the Bishop of the Lutheran Church in Great Britain and as President represents the 'fourth consitituency', including the Orthodox, Black Majority Churches, the Quakers and others. Bishop Jana is also a Director of the Council of Lutheran Churches in Great Britain and Lutheran Co-Moderator of the Anglican Lutheran Society. Before becoming Bishop, she was Pastor of St Anne’s Lutheran Church in the City of London and Dean of the LCiGB; and previously to that Pastor of the United Latvian Lutheran Congregation.
