Minority Ethnic Christians

Valuing the ongoing socio-religious contributions of British and Irish Christians from the Minority Ethnic communities, and, in the spirit of mission, engendering better understanding between Christians of all ethnicities and cultures.

Throughout the United Kingdom, and particularly in the large urban conurbations, Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) people have a significant presence. According to the 2001 Census, 7.9% i.e. 4.6 million of the UK’s population are from BME heritages. Of these, 45% live in London where they account for 29% of the population. Based on the 2001 Census figures, 38.7% i.e. 1.8 million of the BME population are Christians.
BME Christians are present in all denominations in the UK: from independent fellowships to large international bodies; from Black-led or Black-majority churches to mainstream White-led or white-majority Churches. Since the 1970’s, several ecumenical agencies have emerged to serve the BME Christian community in response to spiritual, social/cultural, economic and political developments.
