Next Saturday, 23 May, in El Salvador, Pope Francis will declare Archbishop Oscar Romero 'Blessed'. Beatification is the penultimate hurdle before someone is declared a saint in the Catholic Church.

Oscar Romero was a Catholic priest and archbishop in El Salvador. His love for his people who were suffering violence and oppression led him to take their side and to denounce their oppressors. They killed him while he was celebrating Mass, on 24 March 1980.

The six Presidents of Churches Together in England have this week issued a statement on contemporary Christian martyrs which mentions Oscar Romero.
